The Center for Indian Country Development is recognizing Gertrude Simmons Bonnin, also known as Zitkála-Šá (Red Bird), for her work as a Native American activist, artist, writer, and composer. She attended boarding school in Indian where she was forbidden to speak her language and give up her culture. She felt she was living in two worlds and spent her life fighting for Native American rights.
