This book explores the history of Native American education from the early 20th century to contemporary times while stressing that diversity is a source of strength in education. The text provides the perspectives of Native Americans on issues of educational self-determination, rebukes stereotypes, makes a compelling case that the preservation of Indigenous languages is a human right and addresses how the standards movement hinders the experience of poor, working class students and English Language Learners (ELL) in the U.S. school system.
