Indian boarding schools were one of the cruelest experiments inflicted upon Native American communities across the United States. In most schools little emphasis was placed on education and the institutions became a breeding ground for abuse, cultural genocide, and forced assimilation. Years after their school experiences ended, students unable to cope with the trauma they experienced often turned to substance abuse and violence. This trauma has been passed on to the next generation who are at risk for entering the same cycle of abuse as their families.
