Education for Extinction tells of the attempts of the U.S. government to “civilize” Native American children through forced assimilation and by keeping students away from their families for long periods of time. In these schools students were made to give up their cultural identities, following the idea of, “kill the Indian and save the man.” While some students converted, others resisted and attempted to maintain a sense of cultural identity even though the odds were against them.
