This is a chapter from the book Healing and Mental Health for Native Americans: Speaking in Red. In the chapter the author, Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart, explains how historical trauma has particularly impacted Native Americans and is then passed on to subsequent generations. This trauma manifests itself ways such as mental health issues, substance abuse, and suicide. Yellow Horse Brave Heart states that a return to cultural roots is part of the healing process and provides an example in the Lakota community.
