River Freemont

(Umoⁿhoⁿ Tribe of Nebraska and Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Descendant)

Digital Archives Specialist

River Freemont (NABS Digital Archives Specialist) stands in front of a grassy plain wearing a red-clay colored button-up, earrings, and a septum piercing.

River Freemont, descendant of the Umoⁿhoⁿ Tribe of Nebraska and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, joined the NABS team in July of 2024.

River earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies with a minor in Indigenous Nations Studies from Portland State University in 2012, and a Master's in Library Science with a concentration in Archives Studies from Emporia State University in 2022. They have since completed coursework in pursuit of a Digital Archives Specialist certificate from the Society of American Archivists (SAA).

River is also active in professional organizations for archivists, serving as the coordinator of the Native American Collections Roundtable of Northwest Archivists, on the steering committee of the Native American Archives Section of SAA, and as a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging’s Task Group for Metadata Related to Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.

Prior to joining NABS, River worked as an archivist at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where they served on the Advisory Council for Collaboration with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, and helped organize the first powwow ever held on campus.

River is a descendant of boarding school survivors who attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School and Haskell Institute.
