According to a study conducted in Canada, women who attended residential school were more likely to experience violence, especially if they were sexually abused as children. The study was conducted over a timeline of seven years, and interviewed 259 women several times during that period. After hearing of the study’s conclusions, tribes in Canada began mobilizing to address the issue and create solutions to help their people deal with and overcome trauma.
