The driving force behind Carlisle Indian School and the education of Native Americans in boarding schools was Richard Henry Pratt. Pratt believed educating Native Americans was more humane than killing them, and through education Native children would come to accept dominant society’s values. Thousands of children attended Carlisle or other boarding schools across the United States. The wounds created at Carlisle run deep, and are still felt within Indian Country today. This book includes narratives from students, descendants, poets, activists, and research by Native and non-Native scholars.
