Meet the NABS Summer Intern!

June 27, 2018 By NABS

We have a new member of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS) Team that we’d like to introduce! Meet Emily McDonnell, the NABS Summer Intern.

Emily is an enrolled member of the Navajo (Diné) Nation and was raised and educated in the reservation town of Kayenta, Arizona. Like many of her peers she has family that attended the local boarding school in her community, and this inspired her to intern at the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition.

This summer, Emily will be working on uploading materials to our online database, which we hope will become the premier resource on the history, legacy, and impacts of U.S. Indian boarding schools. Emily will be processing and uploading archival sources, contemporary research and studies, and news coverage of Indian boarding schools and their ongoing impacts within Native communities. We are so excited to have Emily with us as we digitize the sources we have and seek out new information on U.S. Indian boarding schools. Our research is a foundational step in telling the truth about boarding schools and informing recommendations to and by American Indian and Alaska Native nations concerning intergenerational trauma, healing, and reconciliation.

You can check out the NABS resource database here and learn more about Emily and her work here.

Have information on U.S. Indian boarding school that isn’t in our database? Please help us build our archive! You can send information about records or others sources to info@nabshc.org.
